is acca hard?

Common thoughts

Are you considering starting the ACCA program but have concerns about its difficulty and potential failure? Are you considering obtaining an Accounting degree before beginning your ACCA studies? Are you worried about having to retake all papers if you do not pass the ACCA exams within a certain timeframe? Additionally, are you often made to believe that there is a quota system in place for ACCA, where not everyone is guaranteed to pass the exam? (A common myth).

Wish to start ACCA but afraid that it is hard or even impossible?

The Truths are:

Success Rates: ACCA exam pass rates can range from 30-85% based on the exam level. For the December 2021 session, the entry-level exams (BT, FA, and MA) had relatively high pass rates at 84%, 71%, and 65% respectively.

Not too intimidating, right?

The ACCA Skills level, the second stage, had an average pass rate of about 52% during the December 2021 session, which is in line with prior examination periods. The final ACCA level, the Strategic level, has a lower average pass rate of approximately 40%, attributed to factors such as increased difficulty and more complex content.

Challenges on the Road to Success:

After completing the second stage of the ACCA program, students who start working may find it difficult to juggle work and studies.

Degree students with full exemptions for ACCA begin at the Strategic level. Although these students benefit from exemptions, they might face challenges due to lacking the same foundation as those who started from the beginning of the program. A significant number of these students commence at the Strategic level.

The Strategic level exam is more demanding and necessitates greater competence. These exams are more application-based and require in-depth thinking, analysis, and evaluation skills. Simply memorizing the material is insufficient for passing exams at this level. Failing to demonstrate the required competency may result in not passing the exam.

Should I pursue a Degree first?

Pursue a Degree First?

Many students think that earning an accounting degree is a more secure choice and should be done before commencing ACCA studies. Moreover, numerous accounting firms mandate their employees to pass professional accountancy exams like ACCA for career progression. We recommend evaluating both options and considering their advantages and disadvantages before deciding.

Points to Ponder:

An accounting degree can be more costly, with expenses ranging from RM70,000 to RM120,000 at local private institutions. On the other hand, completing the entire ACCA program costs approximately RM30,000.

Exemption fees must also be paid to ACCA, which can amount to roughly GBP 1,000 (around RM6,000) for 9 papers.

Starting directly with ACCA provides training aligned with the expectations and syllabus of ACCA, laying a solid foundation for the professional papers. For students who enter ACCA through the exemption route with their degree, the main disadvantage is the extra effort required to rebuild their knowledge base to handle the professional papers.
